An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was publicly declared, sparking debate about potential gains made from non-public details of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the hours before President Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the president had been apprehended.

A particular user, which became a member last month and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Trading information shows that users put the odds of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, pointing to a rapid movement in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other platform users also earned large payouts from similar wagers.

Political Attention Grows

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

A new rule presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Market Background

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the United States, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to political events.

This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Insider trading is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
