The English and Welsh Pitted Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by sporting icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales find themselves placed in the same pool for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major early clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing mirrors their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' surprise early exit.

Other Notable Pool Draws

Ireland alongside the Scots also share a pool together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks before the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools play out in line with the current world rankings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both the English and Ireland all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the competition.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. France are grouped with Japan, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six group winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
