"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" a text arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There is only a single issue: I also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. A host of celebrated fans have publicly coveted the honor.

The evidence suggests something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the best ensembles, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals frequently depict them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That's the biggest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"Therefore everyone is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Award Milestone

The band are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The album came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The lyrics track breakups and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That recent toughness called for a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The band's openness fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Future

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

But Haim will consistently be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
